Hiring a Professional Makeup Artist

Have you been thinking about hiring a makeup artist for a special event? Whether you’re searching online or you’ve gotten a personal referral, your first step will be to check out the artist’s portfolio. This may be on their website or Instagram. What things do you notice when you look at their work? Most artists have a specialty, which may be beauty, editorial, or even special effects makeup. For those that do beauty makeup, which covers bridal, event, and red carpet makeup looks, you may notice a style that the artist leans towards. For example, some do more natural or softer looks, while others are more heavy handed with their application, and some more trendy. Find an artist whose aesthetic matches your preference, or one who can create any kind of look.

Once you’ve found an artist whose work you like, here are some other things to consider. Is the artist able to accommodate everyone who sits in their chair? Does their work represent all ages and skin tones? This is particularly important if you are hiring for your wedding day and plan to have makeup done for your bridal party and family members. Every artist’s kit should have a full range of foundation colors and products for all skin types.

Not all makeup kits are alike. Sure, they all contain makeup and brushes, but let’s look closer. Is the artist organized and tidy or do they carry a messy bag full of dirty palettes? Every makeup artist should follow strict sanitation practices to keep their clients safe. It’s so important to use disposable applicators and clean brushes with every client! No double dipping into mascara, lip gloss, concealer tubes, etc.

Don’t hesitate to ask some questions before you hire someone. You may want to find out what’s included in the application. Does the artist do proper skin prep prior to the makeup? These steps make a significant difference in how well your skin looks and how your makeup holds up throughout it’s wear. Bonus if your artist is also an esthetician! Ask if false lashes are included and what kinds they offer. Lashes are usually a great idea for a special event. Lastly, find out how long it’ll take your artist to complete the job so you can plan accordingly.

Best of luck to you on your search (hopefully, now that you’re on my website, your search is over!). I’m happy to answer any questions you might have, just shoot me an email!
